The leaves :

The leaves are usually a richer green in color but, they can range from light to dark green depending on the state of vitality of the plant. There are 5-9 leaflets per stem that are arranged in an alternating pattern.

(i.e. one left, one right, one left and so on... see diagram below)

The leaves have a barely fuzzy, rough texture with one crease down the center with rounded tips that taper slightly toward the stem. The leaves are never pointed or jagged. The leaf pattern (ALTERNATE) is one of the best ways to tell CI apart from similar looking weeds)


i.e.
 Creeping Indigo's FRIENDLY, NON-TOXIC cousin, "Hairy Indigo" looks most like C.I. but, has pinnate leaves and brown colored stems.
